When someone says "B2 Beruf", they can mean three different exams: the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2 at the end of the BAMF job-related language course, the telc Deutsch B2+ Beruf for the workplace, or the scaled telc Deutsch B1·B2 Beruf. All three are separate exams with their own formats, and none of them is the general telc Deutsch B2. Before you practise anything, you need to know which one you are sitting, because the writing tasks are different from the ground up.

Few search terms cause more confusion than "B2 Beruf". In courses, on YouTube and in study groups everything runs together: one person practises a forum post, another a business letter, a third a complaint e-mail, and all three believe they are preparing for the same exam.
They are not. And the price of the mix-up is the same as for any text-type mistake: you spend weeks training a task that is not in your exam.
This article sorts out the names. Not as a catalogue, but along the one question that counts: which exam are you actually sitting, and what does that mean for your preparation?

Four exams, four different writing tasks. A forum post does not help you in the general telc B2, and a complaint e-mail does not help you in the DTB B2.
The DTB B2: the exam most people mean
When someone from a Berufssprachkurs says "telc B2 Beruf", they almost always mean the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2. It is the exam that ends the BAMF Berufssprachkurs B2. telc developed it, which is why it circulates everywhere as "telc B2 Beruf"; its official name is DTB B2.
This is the junction where many paths sort themselves out, and we covered it in detail in the DTZ article: the Berufssprachkurs ends with the DTB B2, not with the general telc B2. If you are sitting in the course, you are preparing for the DTB. You come to the general telc B2 on a different track, namely when a recognition authority, a university or an employer demands that particular certificate.
The DTB B2 writing task is a forum post in the company's internal forum. The official task instructions demand, verbatim: "Begründen Sie Ihre Meinung und nennen Sie passende Beispiele. Gliedern Sie Ihren Text in sinnvolle Abschnitte." Justify your opinion, give fitting examples, structure your text into meaningful paragraphs. The topics are workplace debates with a built-in trade-off: a company crèche versus holiday pay, a company phone with constant availability, a dress code at company expense. And the text type is a public post addressed to colleagues, not a letter: the official task asks for paragraphs, opinion and examples, not the letter features of subject line, salutation and sign-off.
Practise for this with complaint-letter building blocks and you are practising the wrong register and the wrong text type.
telc Deutsch B2+ Beruf: the job-related certificate
The telc Deutsch B2+ Beruf is a standalone telc exam for the workplace, independent of the BAMF system. Its writing section consists of two texts: a longer production, depending on the task a letter, a memo or a short report of 180 to 200 words, and a short e-mail or notice of 60 to 80 words.
That is a different practice economy from the general B2: two text types instead of one, more length, and workplace communication instead of everyday matters. If this is your exam, train short reports and internal notices, not the semi-formal complaint.
telc Deutsch B1·B2 Beruf: the scaled variant
The telc Deutsch B1·B2 Beruf tests two levels at once, much like the DTZ, and certifies either B1 or B2 at the end, depending on performance. The writing is classic business correspondence: a letter to an external business partner, such as a supplier, plus an e-mail written on a colleague's behalf, with subject line, salutation, opening and closing.
Its advantage is the safety net the general B2 does not have: miss B2 and you can still finish with B1. That makes it the natural choice when the actual level sits between the two grades.
One more source of confusion: the word "Forum" does appear in this exam, but in the reading section. You read forum posts; you do not write one. That, too, produces wrong practice plans.
And the general telc B2? For many people it remains the right one
After all the Beruf variants, the counter-question: who still needs the general telc Deutsch B2?
More people than the name suggests. In medical recognition, for example, most federal states demand general-language B2 plus a specialist language exam at C1, documented in the Marburger Bund's federal-state overview. In nursing, general B2 is the usual requirement. Universities and many employers likewise simply ask for a "B2 certificate".
Which means: a professional purpose does not automatically mean a Beruf exam. Whether your institution wants the DTB B2, a Beruf variant or the general certificate is its decision, not the exam name's. The rule from the DTZ article applies word for word: ask in writing which certificate is accepted, before you book or practise anything.

The three-step test: which exam are you actually sitting?
Step 1: Are you in a BAMF Berufssprachkurs? Then your course ends with the DTB B2. Ask your course leader, they will know for certain, and practise the forum post.
Step 2: Is an institution demanding a certificate from you? Then the institution decides, not you. Ask in writing: which level, which exam, which provider. The answer determines your practice plan.
Step 3: Do you have a registration confirmation? The exam name on it is the truth. "Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2" is the DTB. "telc Deutsch B2" with no suffix is the general exam. "B2+ Beruf" and "B1·B2 Beruf" are spelled out in full. Do not start practising until you have read that name.
Sixty seconds of reading save weeks of wrong training. It is the same logic as reading the task in the writing exam, one level up.
What you can do right now
- Find out the official name of your exam: registration confirmation, course leader, or the institution demanding the certificate.
- Sort your practice materials. YouTube videos with "telc B2 Beruf" in the title almost always mean the DTB B2 and its forum post. Check which exam a video is for before you watch it.
- If yours is the general telc B2: your writing task is the semi-formal e-mail. The annotated complaint letter shows it from the examiner's side of the table.
- If yours is the DTB B2: practise opinion, justification, examples and paragraphs, without salutation and sign-off. A complaint-letter template leads you in the wrong direction.

FAQ: B2 Beruf
Is "telc B2 Beruf" the same as the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2?
In everyday usage mostly yes, officially no. The Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2 (DTB B2) is the final exam of the BAMF Berufssprachkurs and was developed by telc, which is why it is often called "telc B2 Beruf". But the telc Deutsch B2+ Beruf also exists as a separate exam with a different format. What is binding is the name on your registration confirmation.
Does the Berufssprachkurs B2 end with the telc B2?
No. The BAMF Berufssprachkurs B2 ends with the Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B2. The general telc Deutsch B2 is a different exam, which you need when an institution demands that particular certificate.
What is the biggest difference between the DTB B2 and telc Deutsch B2?
For your preparation: the writing task. In the DTB B2 you write a forum post without salutation and sign-off, with a justified opinion and examples. In the telc Deutsch B2 you write a semi-formal e-mail, usually a complaint or a request for information, with subject line, salutation and closing. Two different text types with different registers.
Is the DTB B2 enough for professional recognition?
That is decided by the responsible recognition authority, and requirements differ by federal state and profession. Some authorities accept only certain providers or demand general-language B2. Ask in writing before you commit to an exam.
Which exam is easier?
They are different, not easier or harder. The DTB B2 tests job-related communication, and its published rating grids contain no criterion knock-out like the zero-point rule of the general B2. In exchange, its writing time is tighter, because it shares a block with the Sprachbausteine. The scaled B1·B2 Beruf is the only one with a safety net at B1.
I have been practising for the wrong exam. What now?
A lot transfers: vocabulary, grammar, reading speed, the exam routine. What you have to switch is the writing text type and its register. If you have spent weeks writing forum posts, what you need most for the semi-formal e-mail are the text-type features: subject line, salutation, Konjunktiv politeness, closing.
